Gwalia Dreamscheme Projects

Dreamschemers August 2013We're working with children and young people aged 8 to 14 in local communities to help them work towards something positive during their free time in school breaks.

Using a 'work = points = trips’ system, they can carry out simple jobs in the local area such as litter picking or painting to gain points which can be spent on daytrips to places like Oakwood, Clyne Farm and Techniquest.

If you would like to set up a Deamscheme in your area, call us on 0800 012 1080.

Aberdulais Dreamscheme

Our first Dreamscheme was set up in Aberdulais in 2007 with the  aim of giving children a sense of value and the opportunity to mix with other local children.

Since then, we have worked closely with the community to help make it an even better place to live. The children have done litterpicks, fence painting, bulb planting and over the last two years, they created a community garden.

They've grown vegetables from seed, learnt how to cook their crop and held tea parties for their family and neighbours. As rewards the children earn trips to place like Oakwood, Clyne Farm, Techniquest and most recently, Heatherton World of Activities in Pembrokeshire!

In November 2012 the Aberdulais Dreamscheme Community Garden was awarded a 'Highly Commended' in the Green Project of the Year category of the Neath Port Talbot Environment Awards, with three members attending the Awards Ceremony held at The Towers Hotel, Llandarcy.

Ystradgynlais Dreamscheme

Dreamschemers planting seedsThe Ystradgynlais Dreamscheme began in Dol Y Dderwen in October 2011 when the local children planted spring bulbs in the street. In February 2012 they continued to brighten up their street by planting winter flowering pansies and polyanthus.

Throughout 2012 the children created and tended a small vegetable and flower garden outside our supported housing project and painted fences along the street that had recently been repaired.

What is Dreamscheme?

Dreamscheme logoThe Dreamscheme began as a community initiative in 1995 in Sheffield when it was introduced to reduce the amount of anti-social behavior in the area and to involve young people in community projects including environmental, social, creative and personal development tasks.

The scheme works on a ‘work=points=trips’ basis and allows children and young people between the ages of 8 and 14 to earn points which can then be spent on trips and activities of their choice. The aim is to give children something positive to work towards during the school breaks and to help them develop a sense of being valued and to mix with other children.

Since 1995, the Dreamscheme Network has evolved. The Dreamscheme operates across the UK and as far as Uganda reaping many rewards, from seeing an area become more attractive to a young person being really proud of the work they have done. It works on the basis that if a young person is involved with their community they will think more of it and feel a part of it. Social Landlords, community and regeneration groups and faith-based organisations have since become involved with Dreamscheme and anyone can begin a Dreamscheme in their local area.
